Scientist II – Lipid Nanoparticle (LNP) Analytical Development
Location: San Diego, CA (Onsite – No relocation assistance)
Pay Rate: $45.00 - $48.00/hr
Contract: 6+ months, with possibility of extension or conversion
Benefits: Weekly pay, Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Scientist II to join the Gene Medicines team in San Diego, CA. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development and characterization of innovative non-viral nucleic acid delivery technologies for in vivo genome editing and gene therapy applications.

The successful candidate will support the analytical characterization of lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based pharmaceuticals, focusing on analytical method development, physicochemical characterization, and evaluation of LNP formulations. This role requires hands-on experience with gradient-elution HPLC techniques and a strong background in pharmaceutical or analytical sciences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform analytical characterization of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) encapsulating nucleic acids and LNP components using HPLC and Biolayer Interferometry (BLI).
  • Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot analytical methods for characterizing LNP formulations and their individual components.
  • Apply gradient-elution HPLC techniques, including Reverse Phase (RP), Ion-Pair Reverse Phase (IPRP), and Anion Exchange (AEX), to support analytical testing.
  • Evaluate physicochemical properties of experimental nanoparticle formulations and establish correlations with their efficacy and safety.
  • Generate, analyze, and maintain accurate analytical data, ensuring detailed laboratory documentation and consistent reporting of results.
  • Collaborate with analytical scientists and cross-functional teams to support ongoing research and development projects.
  • Assist with routine laboratory operations, including supply ordering, instrument calibration, and laboratory scheduling.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Bachelor's degree holders must have at least 5 years of relevant experience; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience developing analytical methods using gradient-elution HPLC techniques, such as RP, IPRP, or AEX.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to generate accurate and reproducible results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the ability to organize, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask, manage multiple projects, and work effectively in a collaborative laboratory environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with Biolayer Interferometry (BLI) or Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR).
  • Experience with Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS).
  • Familiarity with analytical data software such as GraphPad Prism or JMP.
  • Previous experience supporting pharmaceutical development, lipid nanoparticle characterization, or gene therapy research.
