Our client is a well-established civil engineering and land-development firm with approximately 60 employees serving private-sector clients throughout the Nashville market. The firm provides planning and civil engineering services for residential subdivisions, commercial developments, educational facilities, parks, entertainment venues, and other high-profile developments. This is a fully onsite position in Nashville, TN, with relocation considered for the right candidate.

About the Role

The Civil Engineering Project Manager will oversee multiple private-sector land and site-development projects from initial design through completion while combining technical engineering expertise, project management, client relationship management, and team leadership. The PM will generally maintain ownership of projects throughout their entire lifecycle and will manage approximately four to seven active projects at a time, with an average project duration of six to eight months.

Responsibilities

  • Manage civil engineering and land-development projects from initial design through completion.
  • Lead projects through entitlement, site design, permitting, construction administration, and closeout.
  • Manage approximately 4-7 active projects simultaneously, prioritizing deadlines and project needs.
  • Oversee project schedules, budgets, deliverables, deadlines, and overall quality.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for private-sector clients.
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
  • Coordinate with municipalities, consultants, contractors, developers, and other stakeholders.
  • Lead and coordinate a team of approximately six engineers and design professionals.
  • Review engineering plans for accuracy, quality, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Perform limited hands-on engineering and design work as needed, with approximately 20-30% of the role involving plan review or design assistance.
  • Address grading, drainage, stormwater, utility coordination, permitting, and other land-development challenges.
  • Identify potential issues early and develop solutions before they negatively impact schedules, budgets, or quality.
  • Mentor and develop younger engineers and design professionals.
  • Maintain project documentation and utilize project-management systems to monitor project performance.
  • Support client retention and existing-account growth, with opportunities to participate in business development based on individual strengths and interests.

Qualifications

  • Approximately 8+ years of civil engineering experience, with a target range of 7-15+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong experience in private-sector land and site development is required.
  • Proven civil engineering project-management experience.
  • Experience managing multiple private-sector clients and active projects.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Tennessee PE license or the ability to obtain Tennessee licensure through reciprocity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Required Skills

  • Strong AutoCAD Civil 3D proficiency.
  • Experience with entitlement, grading, drainage/stormwater, utility coordination, permitting, construction administration, plan review, and quality control.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage project schedules, budgets, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or directing engineers and design professionals.
  • Strong client communication and relationship-management skills.
  • Ability to combine technical engineering work with project management and team leadership.
  • Experience with project-management software; Deltek Ajera is preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Nashville-area municipal experience is a plus.
  • Established private-sector client relationships and business-development instincts are a plus.
  • Experience serving as a market or team lead is a plus.
