Description:

Job Summary

The Hardware Systems Engineer will integrate sensors and hardware onto UAS (drone) platforms. The role combines systems engineering, mechanical design, hardware testing/validation, UAS integration, flight testing, documentation, and Level 2 engineering support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical components related to sensors and hardware.
  • Plan and execute sensor and hardware integrations for new UAS platforms.
  • Maintain existing sensor and hardware integrations.
  • Perform UAS flight testing and hardware validation.
  • Design, fabricate, and document wire harnesses.
  • Conduct hardware/software compatibility testing between sensors, UAS platforms, and third-party post-processing software.
  • Create and maintain engineering drawings and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Create and maintain internal engineering, production, and user-facing documentation.
  • Provide Level 2 engineering support and troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide engineering input.
  • Support feasibility testing, engineering validation, and product improvements.
  • Identify process/system issues and support change-management activities.
  • Facilitate documentation changes between engineering and production teams.
  • Coordinate with internal engineering teams and technology partners.
  • Help develop product improvement and sustainment criteria.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on company sensors, hardware, functions, and applications.
  • Support small- to medium-scale engineering projects while managing cost, time, quality, and risks.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering field.
  • Minimum 1 year of CAD experience; PTC Creo preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience with Pixhawk autopilots, including PX4 and ArduPilot.
  • Ability to interpret engineering requirements independently.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and work with limited supervision.

Preferred / Additional Skills
  • Experience with UAS/drones.
  • Experience with MAVLink-based systems.
  • Experience with UAS instrumentation, hardware testing, and validation.
  • Experience with mechanical design and engineering documentation.
  • Experience with wire harness design and fabrication.
  • Experience managing engineering changes and technical documentation.

Manager Notes
  • Strong preference for candidates familiar with Pixhawk hardware, PX4, ArduPilot, and MAVLink-based systems.
  • Candidates should be willing and interested in learning these systems.
  • Must be able to learn how company products work and how to make them compatible with different UAS platforms.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Position starts onsite immediately.
  • Approximately 25% of the day spent on feet.
  • Ability to lift up to 55 lbs.
  • May require travel using a personal vehicle, potentially weekly depending on season.
  • Travel may also be required for flight testing and validation.
