Engineering Intern (Co-op)

Supports projects from concept through launch, with time studies, SOPs, process improvement, equipment reviews, and lean/ISO activities in a manufacturing setting. Requires enrollment in or recent graduation from a related degree or diploma program; CAD and manufacturing experience are assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support new and existing projects from inception to completion - timing, concept, feasibility, design, specifying, construction, try-out, launch, buy-off, budget, prototype programs, and engineering changes.
  • Perform time studies as needed, develop and implement SOPs for all work areas. Update and maintain existing and future SOPs.
  • Work with the senior production team to design solutions to improve production processes, ergonomic design, and economic viability benefiting the operations of the organization.
  • Participate in equipment design reviews, equipment buy-offs, and process reviews whilst keeping in mind how they affect production and our processes.
  • Work with other Engineers to ensure that all equipment meets all of the Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSHSR) requirements.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Participate in Kaizen events and Continuous Improvement initiatives and support the implementation of lean manufacturing concepts such as 5S/Visual Management.
  • Develop and maintain plant equipment standards.
  • Participate as required in all ISO activities such as PFMEA, control plans and APQP.
  • Follow and adhere to requirements of current customer quality and environmental management systems standards.
  • Participate in the evaluation of manufacturing processes: product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling and materials: conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators
  • Assist Management Team in developing capacity plans and bottleneck analysis.
  • Work with Engineering to ensure new products/technologies conform to production capabilities.
  • Comply with all health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Model Hörmann Oro-Medonte core values and perform other related duties as required

Health & Safety Responsibilities

  • Comply with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, including worker duties under Section 28
  • Follow all company health and safety rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Adhere to established safety, quality, environmental, and housekeeping standards
  • Report hazards, near misses, incidents, defects, or compliance issues promptly
  • Participate in investigations and provide input on corrective actions
  • Uphold workplace violence and harassment prevention policies (Bill 168)
  • Attend required Environmental Health and Safety training
  • Understand and exercise the right to refuse unsafe work

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Good problem solving skills with an ability to take concept of a process and establish the equipment needed to make it happen
  • Must have strong organizational, interpersonal and communications skills
  • Ability to work independently and achieve results
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and knowledge of current machining method
  • Continuously manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Office Suite and ERP

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in or recent graduate of degree or diploma program in related field
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment an asset
  • Experience using CAD software such as AutoCAD or Solidworks an asset
