Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Tax Manager to lead tax compliance, planning, and advisory services for a diverse portfolio of clients including high net worth individuals, trusts and estates, partnerships, corporations, and nonprofit organizations. This role combines technical tax expertise (federal, state & local, and international), client relationship management, and team leadership. The Tax Manager will oversee preparation and review of returns, manage complex tax projects (M&A, transfer pricing, tax provision), provide strategic planning and structuring advice, and ensure quality control and risk management across engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage tax compliance and advisory engagements for individuals (1040), trusts and estates (1041, 706, 709), passthrough entities (1065, 1120S), and corporations (1120).
- Supervise, mentor, and develop senior staff, tax supervisors, and associates; review workpapers and tax returns for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
- Conduct tax planning and structuring for high net worth individuals (HNW/HNWI), families, closely held businesses, real estate and construction clients, and nonprofit entities.
- Perform technical tax research and apply federal, state & local (SALT), and international tax laws (including BEPS/OECD treaty analysis) to client issues; prepare memos and present findings to clients and internal stakeholders.
- Support M&A tax due diligence, transaction structuring, tax provision (ASC 740) calculations, and post-transaction integration activities.
- Coordinate and manage tax controversy and audit support, nexus and apportionment studies, and tax controversy risk mitigation strategies.
- Oversee tax accounting, reporting and compliance processes including FATCA/CRS/FBAR requirements and indirect taxes (VAT/GST, sales & use).
- Leverage tax technology and tools (ONESOURCE, CCH, Vertex, CorpTax, ProSystem fx Tax, UltraTax, Oracle) and data tools (Advanced Excel/VBA, Alteryx/Power Query, SQL) to improve workflow, automation, and quality control.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including wealth advisors, legal counsel (JD/LLM), payroll, and finance (ERP systems such as SAP) to deliver integrated tax and financial solutions.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of tax law changes, develop client-facing thought leadership materials, and support business development and client retention efforts.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Tax, or related field; Masters degree or advanced law degree (JD, LLM) is a plus.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required; Enrolled Agent (EA) or other professional tax credentials are a plus.
- Minimum 610 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting or a professional services environment, with demonstrated experience managing engagements and staff.
- Deep technical knowledge across individual taxation, partnership tax, corporate tax, trust & estate taxation, and passthrough entities (1040, 1120S, 1120, 1065, 1041, 706, 709).
- Experience with high net worth individuals and families, estate and gift tax planning, fiduciary matters, and trust administration.
- Experience with SALT, international tax and transfer pricing, tax provision (ASC 740), M&A tax and due diligence, and tax controversy preferred.
- Proficiency with tax software and technology: ONESOURCE, CCH, Vertex, CorpTax, ProSystem fx Tax, Thomson Reuters UltraTax, Oracle; advanced Excel skills including VBA; familiarity with Alteryx/Power Query and SQL is desirable.
- Strong leadership, project management, and client relationship skills; ability to manage multiple complex engagements and prioritize deliverables under tight deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, tax research and writing experience, and a commitment to quality control and risk management.
- Familiarity with GAAP/IFRS tax accounting, payroll & withholding tax, VAT/GST, and indirect tax matters a plus.
