Position Overview
We are seeking a results-driven Director of Business Development to lead growth initiatives for our construction and engineering business. This role is responsible for identifying and qualifying new market opportunities, building and managing client relationships, and driving strategic pursuits from lead generation through contract award. The ideal candidate combines construction industry expertise (preferably with General Contractor experience), strong sales and proposal leadership, and the ability to collaborate with engineering and operations teams to convert opportunities into profitable projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a strategic business development plan to meet revenue and market expansion targets within the construction and engineering sectors.
  • Identify, qualify, and pursue new client relationships and project opportunities across public and private sectors, including design-bid-build, design-build, CMAR, and negotiated work.
  • Lead proposal development efforts, including opportunity capture planning, win strategies, pricing coordination, and preparation/review of technical and commercial proposal content.
  • Manage and grow relationships with owners, developers, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and trade partners to maximize referral and repeat business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with estimating, operations, project management, and engineering teams to ensure bid-ability, constructability, and profitable project delivery.
  • Track market trends, competitor activity, and client needs to inform service offerings and strategic positioning.
  • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and client meetings to increase brand visibility and generate leads.
  • Mentor and develop business development and sales staff, establishing KPIs, pipeline reporting, and performance metrics.
  • Negotiate commercial terms, contract structures, and preconstruction agreements in collaboration with legal and finance teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive business development or sales experience in construction, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing BD teams or functions.
  • Demonstrated experience working with or for a General Contractor and familiarity with construction delivery methods, estimating, and field operations.
  • Proven track record of winning mid-to-large scale construction projects and managing complex proposal processes.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in pricing strategy, contract negotiations, and risk assessment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing executive-level proposals, presentations, and client deliverables.
  • Proficiency in CRM systems, proposal management tools, and Microsoft Office suite; familiarity with construction estimating software a plus.
  • Ability to travel as required to meet clients and attend industry events.
