Position Overview
The Healthcare Superintendent will lead on-site supervision for new construction, renovation and expansion projects in hospital and medical facility environments. This role is responsible for safe, on-time, high-quality delivery of ground-up and complex healthcare construction while coordinating with clinical staff, owners, design teams and subcontractors to maintain patient safety, regulatory compliance and operational continuity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily field operations on acute hospital, medical facility and higher education healthcare projects, ensuring work progresses according to schedule and contract documents.
  • Implement and enforce safety programs and site-specific plans, including OSHA 30 compliant practices, infection control measures (ICRA) and life safety procedures to protect patients, staff and visitors.
  • Coordinate sequencing and logistics with hospital administration, facilities teams and clinical leadership to minimize disruption to operations and maintain access and utility requirements.
  • Manage subcontractor performance, conduct daily toolbox talks, enforce quality standards, and perform regular inspections to ensure workmanship meets project specifications and healthcare codes (NFPA, FGI, ADA).
  • Maintain detailed project documentation including daily reports, RFI logs, submittals, change orders, meeting minutes and safety incident reports.
  • Oversee site logistics: material deliveries, laydown areas, hoisting/crane operations, temporary utilities, and site security tailored to sensitive healthcare environments.
  • Collaborate with project managers, design engineers and commissioning agents during turnover, testing and commissioning to achieve successful occupancy and regulatory approvals.
  • Control field labor and material costs through effective manpower planning, productivity monitoring and coordination to avoid schedule delays and minimize change orders.
  • Provide mentorship and training to field staff and craft labor on healthcare-specific requirements, safety protocols and quality expectations.
  • Respond to on-site emergencies, coordinate corrective actions, and work with stakeholders to implement mitigation strategies that protect patients and staff.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7+ years of hands-on construction field experience with at least 3-5 years supervising healthcare or acute hospital projects; proven experience on ground-up hospital construction and medical facilities renovations.
  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional healthcare safety training (ICRA, HAZWOPER, or equivalent) strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare codes and standards including NFPA, FGI Guidelines, CMS/State Hospital requirements, and life safety systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate with hospital operations, higher education clients and clinical staff to maintain continuity of care during construction.
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods, reading blueprints, specifications and submittals; proficiency with field management software and scheduling tools (Procore, Primavera, MS Project or similar).
  • Excellent leadership, communication and conflict-resolution skills with a track record of managing subcontractors and multi-disciplinary crews.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise field reports and maintain accurate documentation; experience managing RFIs, change orders and QA/QC processes.
  • Valid drivers license; ability to pass background checks and work in secure hospital environments; CPR/First Aid certification and healthcare construction credentials (e.g., CHC) a plus.
  • Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture or related trade background preferred but not required; demonstrated competency and references from prior healthcare projects required.
