Project Engineer - Building Automation Systems (BAS)
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Project Engineer specializing in Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC controls to lead design, commissioning, and technical delivery for commercial and institutional projects. The Project Engineer will develop control strategies, oversee BAS/BMS integration (including ALC and Distech controllers), coordinate with mechanical/electrical teams and contractors, and ensure systems meet performance, energy, and compliance goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design and engineering of BAS/BMS solutions for HVAC and building systems, including control sequence development and system architecture.
- Program, configure, and troubleshoot BAS controllers (ALC, Distech, and similar platforms) and integrate devices using BACnet, Modbus, and other common protocols.
- Develop technical submittals, control narratives, wiring diagrams, and panel schedules; review mechanical and electrical drawings for control integration.
- Plan and execute factory acceptance testing (FAT), site commissioning, functional performance testing (FPT), and system start-up to verify performance against design intent.
- Coordinate project activities with clients, consulting engineers, contractors, and vendors to maintain schedule, budget, and quality standards.
- Provide field support during installation, perform root cause analysis for system issues, and implement corrective actions.
- Prepare project documentation including as-built drawings, O&M manuals, testing reports, and training materials.
- Mentor junior engineers and technicians, and deliver end-user training to building operators and maintenance staff.
- Ensure compliance with jurisdictional codes, manufacturer guidelines, and company quality standards while driving energy-efficient control strategies.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls Engineering or related technical discipline, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS), HVAC controls, and control system integration.
- Proven experience programming and commissioning BAS platforms such as ALC and Distech; familiarity with other manufacturers and BMS platforms preferred.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, control theory, sensors/actuators, and field instrumentation.
- Proficiency with communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, etc.), control logic programming, and HMI/SCADA interfaces.
- Experience creating control sequences, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical submittals.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills; ability to work independently and on multi-discipline teams.
- Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
- Certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM), BAS Commissioning, or relevant manufacturer certifications are a plus.
