About Sinai Urban Health Institute
Sinai Urban Health Institute (SUHI) is the research arm of Sinai Chicago, a safety-net health system serving Chicago's South and West Sides. Since 2000, SUHI has partnered with communities to understand health disparities and develop solutions that allow all people to thrive in health. Our work combines rigorous, mixed-methods research with deep community engagement, following a model of Understand, Implement, and Measure to turn data into action and action into lasting change.
SUHI has a long history in gun violence research. In 2017, we founded the Chicago Gun Violence Research Collaborative (CGVRC), a citywide partnership of academic institutions, public health professionals, and community organizations working to address gun violence as a public health crisis. CGVRC hosts an annual fellowship for graduate and medical students from Chicagoland institutions. The fellowship trains future public health leaders to explore the root causes of gun violence and conduct applied research focused on equity and prevention.
Position Purpose
Position Purpose: SUHI is seeking a Violence Research Fellow to help build a research agenda for violence-related work at Sinai, working closely with SUHI leadership, clinical partners, and community stakeholders. The fellow will also serve as a lead evaluator for the Westside Trauma Recovery Center, helping to assess the reach and effectiveness of its violence intervention and trauma recovery services as the program launches and grows. The fellow will contribute to both quantitative and qualitative scholarly work and will have the opportunity to publish, present, and build relationships with Sinai’s broader network of research collaborators. This position reports to SUHI’s Director of Population Health Research.
Education and Work Experience:
- Master’s degree with 7 years’ experience or doctoral degree with 1 year of experience in public health, epidemiology, social work, criminology, or a related field. Doctoral degree with 2+ years of experience preferred
- Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods
- Familiarity with community-engaged or participatory research approaches
- Experience with statistical software (e.g., Stata, R, SPSS)
- Interest in or experience with violence prevention, trauma-informed care, or public health approaches to gun violence
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong writing skills, with experience producing academic and/or public-facing materials
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across clinical, research, and community settings
