RN / REGISTERED NURSE - CARDIAC CATH LAB

Provides patient-centered care before, during, and after cardiac procedures, with on-call rotation for emergency and after-hours cases. Offers medical, dental, vision, prescription, PTO, tuition assistance, bonuses, and requires 1 year critical care and cath lab experience, BLS, ACLS, NIH, and PALS within 4 weeks.

Overview

The Cardiac Catheterization Lab Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, patient-centered care before, during, and after diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures. This role requires the ability to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively, and discreetly with patients, physicians, multidisciplinary team members, and the general public while maintaining strict patient confidentiality.

The Cath Lab RN works efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment, demonstrating sound clinical judgment, creativity, initiative, and strong problem-solving skills. The nurse must possess excellent communication abilities and relate well to individuals of diverse backgrounds, training, and experience. Collaboration, professionalism, and adaptability are essential to ensuring safe, efficient procedural flow and optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

Clinical & Procedural Support
  • Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all equipment used within the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
  • Maintains knowledge of sterile supplies and applies proper sterile techniques for all procedures.
  • Assists physicians in the scrub role using sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination, including setting up trays and preparing and positioning patients.
  • Functions in the circulator role by positioning patients to obtain digital images and administering medications and/or contrast media (if certified) under physician supervision and in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Supports physicians in the recorder/monitor role by documenting procedures, balancing calibration, operating physiologic recording equipment, and calculating and reporting patient data gathered during procedures.

Patient Care & Safety
  • Reviews patient charts to verify appropriate information and identify potential risk indicators prior to procedures.
  • Maintains the patient holding area and assists with transporting patients safely throughout the department.
  • Provides radiation protection for patients, staff, and self by adhering to established safety standards.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates appropriate responses, including code activation, first aid, or CPR as needed.
  • Prepares and administers medications and contrast media under the supervision of the Cardiologist.

Medication & Equipment Management
  • Maintains controlled drug inventory in compliance with established controlled substance policies.
  • Ensures crash carts and drug boxes are fully stocked, properly dated, and ready for emergency use.
  • Assists in maintaining inventory levels, ordering supplies, and notifying the coordinator when supplies are low.
  • Participates in product evaluation processes to determine the most effective and cost-efficient supplies and equipment.

Documentation & Quality Improvement
  • Maintains daily work logs and participates in patient follow-up activities.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives, including evaluation, reporting, and follow-up on improvement recommendations.

Scheduling & On-Call Responsibilities
  • Participates in on-call rotation to support emergency and after-hours cardiac catheterization procedures.


Qualifications

  • Minimum of one (1) year of Critical Care nursing experience.
  • One (1) year of experience working in a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
  • Completion of Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) training as part of Department Orientation.
  • EPIC preferred


Credentials

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS or ability to obtain within 4 weeks of hire
  • NIH Certification
