Job description

Bring your cardiac expertise into a setting where nursing supports not only recovery, but lasting change.

Join a specialized rehabilitation program where you can combine clinical assessment, telemetry interpretation, patient education, and preventive care to help patients regain strength and move toward healthier lives. This role offers experienced nurses the opportunity to build meaningful patient relationships while enjoying consistent daytime hours with no call, weekends, or clinic holidays.

The Role

As a Registered Nurse supporting Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation, you will care for patients recovering from cardiac events and procedures through monitored exercise, individualized education, goal setting, and ongoing clinical assessment. You will work with patients who are actively invested in their recovery and have the opportunity to see their progress throughout the rehabilitation journey.

The environment is collaborative and clinically engaging. Nurses work alongside exercise physiologists, physical therapists, respiratory therapists, and fellow RNs while maintaining the autonomy needed to recognize changes in condition and respond appropriately.

The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with traditional eight-hour shifts. There is no call, no weekend schedule, and no work on holidays when clinics are closed.

In this role, you will:
  • Conduct comprehensive intake appointments, obtain medical histories, and complete focused nursing assessments.
  • Develop initial exercise recommendations and contribute to individualized treatment plans.
  • Monitor patients during supervised exercise sessions and interpret telemetry and cardiac rhythms.
  • Identify changes in patient status and respond to urgent or emergent clinical situations.
  • Educate patients about heart failure management, cardiac recovery, medications, lifestyle modification, and disease prevention.
  • Contact referred patients, explain program benefits, schedule intake appointments, and coordinate entry into rehabilitation.
  • Partner with exercise physiologists and other rehabilitation professionals to evaluate progress and adjust care plans.
  • Support patients with diagnoses and procedures that may include NSTEMI, CABG, valve procedures, heart failure, and other qualifying cardiac conditions.
  • Contribute to rehabilitation and post-operative recovery programming while working near pulmonary rehabilitation services supporting pulmonary and transplant populations.

The department conducts five rehabilitation classes each day, creating a steady but structured clinical rhythm. Success in this role requires independent nursing judgment, strong assessment skills, adaptability, and confidence working with limited immediate on-site provider support.

Why UVA Health

At UVA Health, nursing practice is strengthened by the resources and collaboration of an integrated academic health system. Nurses work within a culture that supports clinical excellence, professional governance, evidence-based practice, education, and continued development.

This is an especially compelling opportunity for an experienced inpatient, telemetry, step-down, ICU, cardiology, or ambulatory nurse seeking to apply advanced clinical skills in a recovery-focused environment. Rather than moving from one acute episode to the next, you can help patients understand their conditions, make sustainable changes, and achieve measurable rehabilitation goals.

You will benefit from:
  • A supportive, high-performing multidisciplinary team that shares responsibility for patient care.
  • A patient population motivated by recovery, improved function, and long-term wellness.
  • The opportunity to develop sustained therapeutic relationships and see patients progress over time.
  • A specialized practice environment focused on cardiology, chronic disease management, lifestyle medicine, and preventive care.
  • An expanding service line experiencing continued referral growth and exploring future growth opportunities.
  • A professional nursing environment supported by UVA Health's ANCC Magnet® designation, clinical career ladder, professional governance structure, nursing research, and quality-improvement programs.
  • Exceptional work-life balance with consistent daytime hours and no call, weekends, or clinic holidays.
  • A potentially refreshing transition for experienced nurses who want to remain clinically engaged while moving away from the demands of inpatient-based care.
  • Relocation assistance may be available for qualified candidates.

This role offers the chance to practice with autonomy while remaining connected to a welcoming team known for collaboration, proactive care, and strong relationships with patients.
