Job Description:
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of tenured Full Professor or tenured/tenure-track Associate Professor. Areas of interest include direct digital manufacturing (DDM), including additive manufacturing and 3D printing of electrical, electronic, and electromagnetic devices and systems, as well as computational electromagnetics. Applicants with strong records in related areas of electrical and computer engineering are also encouraged to apply.
Candidates should have a record of scholarship, research leadership, and external funding appropriate for the appointment at the rank sought. Outstanding candidates currently holding tenure-track Assistant Professor positions who are expected to meet the requirements for promotion to Associate Professor with tenure during the hiring process will also be considered.
The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, supervise student research, contribute to departmental, university, and professional service activities, and maintain an externally funded research program. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at UTEP offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The department has 25 faculty members, enrolls more than 900 students and supports over $5.5 million in annual sponsored research expenditures (FY 2025).
ECE faculty conduct research in laboratories and research centers across the department, college, and university. Departmental facilities include a 6,000-square-foot cleanroom with Class 100 and Class 1000 spaces supporting semiconductor fabrication and characterization, including nanoscale 3D printing, thin-film deposition, plasma etching, photolithography, microscopy, spectroscopy, and electrical characterization.
Additional departmental research infrastructure includes advanced additive manufacturing facilities featuring metal, polymer, and multi-process 3D printing systems, as well as access to the UTEP Keck Center for 3D Innovation. The department also maintains strong capabilities for microwave, millimeter-wave, and antenna research, including an anechoic chamber, instrumentation supporting measurements up to 40 GHz, and industry-standard design and simulation tools such as Ansys HFSS. In addition, the Wireless Communications Testbed supports research in wireless communications, software-defined radio, wireless security, spectrum characterization, telecommunications systems, and 4G/5G networks.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field. Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and graduate education. Established record of significant scholarly, creative, entrepreneurial, or technological contributions, evidenced by publications, patents, and/or other research accomplishments. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Established record of securing extramural funding, developing and sustaining a research program, mentoring students and postdoctoral researchers, and leading collaborative research efforts. Evidence of national and international recognition through publications, invited presentations, honors, awards, and other professional achievements.
This position is intended for established researchers at the senior level. Accordingly, recent Ph.D. graduates and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for consideration.
Academic Candidates: Candidates from academic institutions must have qualifications commensurate with appointment at the rank of tenured Full Professor or tenured or tenure-track Associate Professor. Application materials should provide evidence of scholarship, leadership, and research funding appropriate to the rank sought.
Candidates from National Laboratories or Industry: Candidates from national laboratories or industry must have at least six years of progressively responsible research experience following completion of the Ph.D. or postdoctoral training. Applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarship, extramural funding, research and leadership, and professional achievements comparable to those expected for appointment at the rank sought.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience leading large, collaborative research programs; establishing partnerships with industry, national laboratories, and government agencies; translating research into practice through technology transfer, commercialization, or entrepreneurship; leading academic or professional initiatives; mentoring diverse students and researchers; and developing academic programs or research infrastructure.
