Trial Attorney-Civil Litigation Defense (Auto, Construction Defect, General Liability)
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Trial Attorney to lead complex defense litigation matters from case intake through verdict. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in insurance defense with first-chair trial experience handling auto, truck, construction, and general liability cases. This role requires confident courtroom presence, excellent deposition and motion practice skills, and the ability to manage caseloads while delivering favorable outcomes for our clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as first chair in jury and bench trials, developing case strategy and leading courtroom advocacy to achieve favorable verdicts or settlements.
- Manage all phases of litigation for insurance defense matters, including auto, truck, construction, and general liability claims.
- Conduct and defend depositions, prepare witnesses, and coordinate expert testimony.
- Draft and argue dispositive and evidentiary motions, pretrial briefs, and other court filings.
- Develop case budgets, evaluate exposure, and provide strategic guidance and settlement recommendations to carriers and clients.
- Oversee discovery, including written discovery, document production, and e-discovery protocols.
- Collaborate with claims adjusters, outside vendors, and experts to control litigation costs and improve outcomes.
- Maintain accurate case files, deadlines, and billing records; mentor junior attorneys and supervise support staff as needed.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships, communicating case status, risks, and strategies clearly and professionally.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the state bar in good standing.
- 5+ years of litigation experience with significant time spent in insurance defense; substantial first-chair trial experience preferred.
- Proven track record of handling auto, truck, construction, and general liability cases to verdict and/or favorable resolutions.
- Extensive trial skills including jury selection, opening/closing statements, witness examination, and evidentiary rulings.
- Strong deposition experience, including preparing, taking, and defending complex depositions.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; experience drafting pleadings, motions, and trial briefs.
- Ability to manage heavy caseloads, prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently or collaboratively in a firm environment.
- Experience working with insurance carriers, understanding coverage issues, reserving, and claims handling practices.
- Professionalism, integrity, and strong client-facing skills; willingness to mentor junior staff and contribute to business development.
Salary:
- $170k-$200k/yr DOE. Salary can go higher for candidates that can bring a book of business.
