Tax Manager - Public Accounting (CPA Firm)
A fast-growing Michigan CPA firm is looking for an experienced Tax Manager to lead complex engagements for privately held businesses, investors, and non-profits - with a clear pathway to partnership and a genuine commitment to work-life balance.
What you'll do
Review and sign off on complex federal and state tax returns across entity types (1040, 1065, 1120, 1120S, 1041) for a diverse client portfolio
Serve as the primary relationship owner for a book of business clients, delivering proactive tax planning and advisory guidance year-round
Research multi-layered tax issues and partner with firm shareholders to develop and execute tax strategies
Identify tax-saving opportunities, model risk scenarios, and communicate findings clearly to clients and leadership
Supervise, mentor, and develop junior and senior tax staff - setting quality standards and reviewing their work product
Stay current on federal and state tax law changes and translate them into actionable client guidance
Contribute to practice development by deepening existing client relationships and supporting new-business conversations
What you need
Active CPA license (required)
5+ years of tax experience in a public accounting firm
Demonstrated experience reviewing business-entity returns (1065, 1120, 1120S) and individual returns (1040, 1041)
Proven ability to manage client relationships and deliver advisory-level tax planning
Strong supervisory skills with experience mentoring tax staff
Nice to have
Prior tax manager title or equivalent leadership role within a CPA firm
Industry exposure in real estate, non-profits, or closely held businesses
Experience with advanced tax planning or research software (e.g., CCH Axcess, Thomson Reuters, GoSystem)
Master's in Taxation or LLM
Pay & benefits
Base salary: $120,000-$150,000, commensurate with experience
PTO: 4 weeks PTO
