Job description

Tax Manager

About The Role

Looking to step into a Tax Manager role with a premier, North Shore Chicago-based public accounting and business advisory firm known internally and externally as "The Thinkers"?

For over 75 years, our firm has delivered sophisticated tax, accounting, and strategic wealth planning solutions to closely held businesses, entrepreneur-led enterprises, and high-net-worth families. We pride ourselves on moving beyond standard compliance to provide deep, forward-looking advisory services in an environment that prioritizes intellectual curiosity, work-life integration, and long-term client relationships.

In this role, you will lead complex tax compliance and strategic planning engagements, manage client portfolios, mentor a talented team of tax professionals, and directly partner with firm leadership on complex business decisions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Tax Compliance & Technical Review: Lead and review complex federal and state tax filings for high-net-worth individuals, partnerships, S-Corporations, C-Corporations, trusts, and estates.

  • Proactive Tax Advisory: Design and execute innovative tax planning strategies that minimize tax liabilities, optimize cash flow, and align with clients' long-term business and wealth goals.

  • Client Portfolio Leadership: Serve as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for business owners, executives, and family offices-explaining complex tax concepts with clarity.

  • Team Mentorship & Coaching: Supervise, train, and mentor staff and senior accountants; delegate assignments effectively and manage engagement budgets and workflows.

  • Technical Research & Notice Resolution: Perform advanced research on complex federal, state, and local tax issues, prepare formal position memos, and manage tax authority examinations and notices.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with our accounting, advisory, and wealth management teams to deliver comprehensive, integrated solutions.

Qualifications

  • Credentials: Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license required.

  • Experience: 5-8+ years of progressive tax experience in a public accounting firm, with strong expertise in individual, pass-through entity, and corporate taxation.

  • Technical Breadth: Strong technical knowledge of federal and multi-state tax laws; experience with trust, estate, or wealth planning is a strong plus.

  • Software Proficiency: Hands-on experience with industry-standard tax software (e.g., CCH Axcess/ProSystem fx, UltraTax) and Microsoft Office.

  • Leadership & Communication: Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a track record of effective team leadership and client management.

Why Join Us?

  • Thoughtful Work-Life Integration: Enjoy a supportive, human-centric culture with modern hybrid work flexibility and realistic seasonal expectations.

  • High-Impact Client Base: Work directly with entrepreneurial business leaders, family offices, and middle-market enterprises on sophisticated, non-routine engagements.

  • Mentorship & Career Advancement: Direct access to partners, firm-sponsored CPE, professional development resources, and a clear path toward equity leadership.

  • Comprehensive Total Rewards: Competitive base compensation, performance bonuses, firm-matched retirement plan, generous PTO, and full health/dental/vision benefits.
