Job description
Chief Financial Officer (CFO) / Tax Director
About the Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced CFO / Tax Director to join a growing advisory firm dedicated to helping successful business owners, executives, and high-net-worth families make smarter financial decisions. This is a highly consultative role focused on proactive tax strategy, financial leadership, and long-term planning-not traditional public accounting.
If you're looking for an opportunity to use your expertise in a collaborative environment without the demands of busy-season hours, this position offers meaningful client relationships, interesting planning work, and exceptional work-life balance.
Position Summary
The CFO / Tax Director serves as a trusted advisor to privately held businesses and affluent individuals by providing sophisticated tax planning, strategic financial guidance, and business consulting. Rather than simply preparing tax returns, you'll work alongside clients throughout the year to help them improve profitability, reduce tax exposure, strengthen cash flow, and make informed financial decisions.
You'll collaborate with financial advisors, estate planning professionals, and outside legal counsel to deliver coordinated strategies that create long-term value for clients.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Tax Planning
- Develop proactive tax strategies for business owners and high-net-worth individuals.
- Identify opportunities to minimize federal and state tax liabilities.
- Guide clients through entity selection, restructuring, and business transitions.
- Advise on retirement, charitable, trust, estate, and succession planning strategies.
- Review complex tax returns prepared by the tax team while maintaining a planning-first approach.
CFO & Business Advisory
- Serve as a strategic financial advisor for privately owned businesses.
- Analyze financial statements and operational performance.
- Assist clients with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and profitability analysis.
- Help business owners establish KPIs and improve financial reporting.
- Support financing initiatives, acquisitions, business sales, and growth planning.
- Participate in strategic planning meetings with business owners and executive teams.
Client Relationship Management
- Build long-term trusted advisor relationships.
- Lead planning meetings throughout the year rather than focusing only on tax season.
- Translate complex financial concepts into practical recommendations.
- Coordinate with attorneys, bankers, investment professionals, and other advisors when appropriate.
Leadership
- Mentor tax and advisory professionals.
- Review technical tax issues and planning opportunities.
- Improve internal processes and client experience.
- Help expand advisory services and identify opportunities to add value.
Qualifications
Required
- CPA designation required.
- 10+ years of progressive tax and advisory experience.
- Strong background in tax planning for closely held businesses and high-net-worth clients.
- Experience interpreting financial statements and advising business owners.
- Excellent communication and client relationship skills.
- Ability to think strategically beyond tax compliance.
Preferred
- Experience serving as a CFO, Controller, Fractional CFO, or Business Advisor.
- Knowledge of entity structuring, succession planning, and wealth transfer strategies.
- Experience collaborating with financial planners, attorneys, or family office professionals.
- Familiarity with QuickBooks, financial reporting systems, and tax software.
What Success Looks Like
Successful team members are naturally curious, enjoy solving complex problems, and take pride in becoming trusted advisors-not just tax professionals. They proactively identify opportunities, communicate clearly, and enjoy building lasting relationships with clients.
Why This Opportunity Stands Apart
This position is intentionally different from traditional public accounting.
You'll spend your time helping clients make better financial decisions rather than chasing billable hours. The focus is on advisory work, strategic planning, and meaningful client relationships in an environment that values flexibility, collaboration, and sustainable workloads.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation with performance incentives.
- Flexible work arrangements.
- Hybrid or remote opportunities based on experience and location.
- Generous paid time off and holidays.
- Retirement plan with employer contributions.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- Continuing education and professional development support.
- A collaborative, low-ego culture focused on quality rather than billable hours.
- Consistent, manageable workload with a strong emphasis on work-life balance.
