Job description
Senior Embedded Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Embedded Engineer to design, develop, and optimize firmware and embedded software for real-time and Linux-based products. The role combines low-level bare-metal and RTOS development with embedded Linux system integration, hardware bring-up, security and validation to deliver robust, high-performance embedded systems. The ideal candidate is hands-on with microcontrollers and SoCs, comfortable with cross-toolchains, and experienced in debugging, performance tuning, and safety/compliance practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead firmware and embedded software development across bare-metal, RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS, VxWorks, ThreadX) and Embedded Linux platforms.
- Design, implement and maintain device drivers and hardware abstraction layers for peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, GPIO, ADC, PWM, DMA).
- Perform board bring-up, BSP development, bootloader integration (U-Boot) and Linux kernel configuration/porting.
- Develop and maintain Yocto/Buildroot-based images, cross-compilation toolchains (GCC/Clang) and build pipelines.
- Implement secure boot, OTA update mechanisms, embedded security and cryptographic features to meet product requirements.
- Debug complex issues using GDB, JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes and logic analyzers; perform root-cause analysis of hardware/software interactions.
- Optimize firmware for performance, memory footprint and power (low-power modes, power management techniques).
- Implement robust multithreading/concurrency designs, interrupt handling and DMA-aware drivers for deterministic behavior.
- Define and execute unit, integration and system-level firmware validation; drive CI/CD for automated builds and tests.
- Review PCB schematics and collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure software/hardware compatibility.
- Mentor and coach junior engineers, perform design reviews, and contribute to technical roadmaps and documentation.
- Ensure products meet relevant safety and functional standards (ISO 26262, IEC 61508) and support static analysis/MISRA C compliance activities.
Qualifications
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- 7+ years of professional embedded systems experience, including production firmware for commercial products.
- Proven expertise in C and C++ for embedded systems; experience with MISRA C and static analysis tools.
- Hands-on experience with ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and familiarity with PIC/AVR platforms.
- Strong experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (FreeRTOS, VxWorks, ThreadX) and bare-metal firmware development.
- Embedded Linux experience, including Yocto/Buildroot, BSP creation, U-Boot, and Linux kernel configuration/porting.
- Solid background with cross-compilation/toolchains (GCC, Clang), build systems and board bring-up.
- Proficient with debugging tools and techniques (GDB, JTAG, SWD, oscilloscope, logic analyzer).
- Experience implementing device drivers and working with UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, USB, Ethernet, Bluetooth/BLE, TCP/IP and MQTT.
- Knowledge of secure boot, OTA updates, embedded cryptography and secure firmware best practices.
- Strong understanding of DMA, interrupt handling, multithreading/concurrency and performance optimization.
- Experience with memory management, Flash/EEPROM handling and power/low-power design techniques.
- Familiarity with CI/CD workflows, version control (Git) and automated testing for firmware.
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing, firmware validation and unit testing frameworks.
- Desirable: DSP/signal processing, motor control, FPGA/HDL (Verilog/VHDL), ISO 26262/IEC 61508 implementation experience.
Benefits
- Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
- Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
- Short Term & Long-Term Disability
- Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Holidays)
- 401(k) Retirement Plan plus company match
- Company Shares Plan
