Senior Accountant - Construction
Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Accountant specializing in construction accounting to manage financial reporting, job costing, and controls for our construction projects. The role is responsible for accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements, month-end close activities, project billing and revenue recognition, and supporting audits while partnering with project managers and operational teams to drive financial performance and process improvements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead month-end and year-end close activities and prepare GAAP-compliant financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Maintain and improve job costing processes: review job cost ledgers, analyze variances, update WIP (work-in-progress) schedules, and ensure accurate project profitability reporting.
- Manage construction billing and accounts receivable: prepare and review progress billings, change order documentation, collections, and aging analysis.
- Oversee accounts payable and payroll coordination for project-related costs, ensuring proper coding and timely payments.
- Prepare revenue recognition analyses and apply appropriate construction accounting methods (percentage-of-completion, completed-contract) in accordance with GAAP.
- Develop and maintain cash flow forecasts and budgeting support for active projects and the company overall.
- Support external and internal audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Implement and monitor internal controls, standard operating procedures, and process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and operations teams to reconcile project costs, forecast overruns, and support decision-making.
- Utilize ERP/accounting systems to maintain accurate records, including system setup, reporting, and data integrity (experience with construction ERPs such as Viewpoint, Sage 300, or similar is a plus).
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA designation preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with a minimum of 3 years in construction accounting or working closely with construction/project-based organizations.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and experience applying construction-specific accounting methods (percentage-of-completion, work-in-progress).
- Proven experience with job costing, progress billing, change order accounting, and project financial reporting.
- Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial modeling; experience with construction ERP/accounting systems (e.g., Viewpoint, Sage 300, Jonas, QuickBooks) preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to manage month-end close, prepare reconciliations, and produce timely, accurate financial reports.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and explain financial results to non-financial stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to process improvement and internal control compliance.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced construction environment and manage multiple projects and deadlines concurrently.
