Project Engineer (MEP)
Position Overview
We are seeking a proactive Project Engineer (MEP) to support design, coordination, installation and commissioning of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems on commercial and industrial construction projects. The Project Engineer will work closely with project managers, subcontractors (mechanical and general contractors), consultants and clients to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and to quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Support project planning and execution for MEP scope, including developing work schedules, tracking progress and reporting to project management.
- Coordinate MEP design review, constructability assessments, value engineering and integration with architectural and structural disciplines.
- Prepare, review and maintain technical submittals, shop drawings, RFI responses and equipment specifications for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.
- Liaise with mechanical contractors, general contractors, vendors and specialty subcontractors to resolve installation and sequencing issues.
- Perform site inspections and supervision to verify installation conforms to drawings, codes and quality standards; document non-conformances and follow through on corrective actions.
- Monitor project cost and change orders for MEP work, support budget forecasting and assist with procurement and material tracking.
- Facilitate BIM coordination meetings, clash detection resolution and coordination of routing for HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing and fire protection systems.
- Support commissioning, startup and testing activities, generating punch lists, commissioning reports and ensuring performance criteria are met.
- Maintain project documentation, progress logs, safety reports and ensure compliance with site safety and regulatory requirements.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, coordinate with consultants and attend client meetings to communicate technical status and support issue resolution.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Construction Engineering or related discipline.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in MEP engineering or project engineering on commercial or industrial construction projects; experience with mechanical contractors and general contractors preferred.
- Practical knowledge of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems design, installation methods, codes and standards (ASHRAE, NEC, NFPA or local equivalents).
- Proficient with AutoCAD and Revit (BIM) for drawing review and coordination; experience with clash detection tools and construction management software (e.g., MS Project, Procore) is an advantage.
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills for submittals, RFIs and commissioning records.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams, manage schedules, and control project cost and variations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with clients, consultants and site teams.
- Willingness to conduct site visits and support site supervision; commitment to safety and quality assurance.
- Professional certifications or licenses (e.g., EIT, PE, CLC, PMP) and vendor equipment training are a plus.
