Job description
Production Supervisor - Food Manufacturing
Position Overview
The Production Supervisor will lead day-to-day operations on the production floor of a food manufacturing facility, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant production that meets quality and output targets. This role combines people leadership with operational oversight: scheduling and coaching operators, maintaining food safety and GMP standards, optimizing processes through Lean and Continuous Improvement methods, and coordinating with quality, maintenance, and planning teams. The supervisor will use ERP systems to track production, drive waste reduction, and implement improvement initiatives to meet cost, safety, and service objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coach production staff, including scheduling, training, performance management, and fostering a safe, collaborative team environment.
- Manage daily production activities to meet volume, quality, and on-time delivery targets while adhering to food safety and regulatory requirements (GMP, HACCP, FDA as applicable).
- Operate and maintain production schedules in the ERP system; track output, materials usage, and downtime; and report production metrics to management.
- Lead continuous improvement and Lean initiatives to reduce waste, improve throughput, and increase first-pass yield; support Six Sigma projects when applicable.
- Coordinate with Quality Assurance to ensure product specifications, sanitation, and traceability procedures are followed; act quickly to resolve nonconformances and customer complaints.
- Oversee equipment operations and collaborate with maintenance to minimize downtime through preventive maintenance and timely repairs.
- Ensure compliance with workplace safety policies, conduct safety reviews, and promote safe work practices and incident reporting.
- Drive training and cross-training programs to build operator capability and flexibility across lines and shifts.
- Participate in new product introductions and process changes, providing input on manufacturability, risk mitigation, and required resources.
- Maintain accurate production documentation, complete shift handovers, and support inventory accuracy through cycle counts and raw material controls.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Food Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- 3+ years of supervisory experience in food production, food processing, or food manufacturing environments.
- Strong knowledge of food production processes, GMP, HACCP, and food safety regulations.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement methodologies; Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher) preferred.
- Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar) for production planning and reporting.
- Proven ability to lead teams, develop staff, and drive performance improvements.
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to root cause analysis and corrective action.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams (Quality, Maintenance, Supply Chain).
- Comfortable working in shift-based environments; forklift certification and experience with production equipment preferred.
