Job description

Lead Engineer Automated Machinery

Lead Engineer Automated Machinery

Position Overview
Lead a cross-functional machine design team to develop robust, high-performance automated machinery including robotic cells, gantry systems, and motion-control driven equipment. Provide technical direction, mentor engineers and designers, and ensure on-time delivery of manufacturable designs that meet performance, safety and cost targets using SolidWorks, FEA and industry best practices in GD&T and PDM.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and day-to-day management for the machine design team, including mentoring, performance feedback and resource planning.
  • Lead concept development and detailed mechanical design of automated machinery, robotic cells and gantry machines, from requirements through to production release.
  • Collaborate closely with controls engineers, systems engineers, manufacturing, and program managers to define interfaces, motion-control requirements and integration strategies for robotic and gantry systems.
  • Create, review and approve SolidWorks models, assemblies and 2D drawings; apply GD&T to ensure manufacturability and proper fit/function.
  • Perform and oversee structural and motion-related analysis (FEA, stress, deflection, modal) to validate designs against performance targets and safety margins.
  • Manage product data in PDM systems, maintain revision control, BOM accuracy and release procedures.
  • Develop and enforce design standards, reusable modules and best practices for automated machinery to shorten development cycles and improve reliability.
  • Support prototyping, machine build, lab commissioning and field installation; troubleshoot mechanical issues and drive corrective actions.
  • Estimate design effort, contribute to project schedules and cost targets, and communicate technical status and risks to stakeholders.
  • Champion continuous improvement, incorporating lessons learned and manufacturing feedback into future designs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Masters degree preferred.
  • 7+ years of hands-on mechanical design experience with automated machinery, including significant exposure to robotic cells, gantry machines and motion control systems; 2+ years in a leadership or lead engineer role preferred.
  • Expert proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assembly design and drawing production.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of GD&T for tolerance specification and inspection.
  • Experience with PDM/PLM systems (e.g., Windchill, Teamcenter, SolidWorks PDM) to manage CAD data and release processes.
  • Practical experience performing FEA (ANSYS, Nastran, SolidWorks Simulation or equivalent) and interpreting results to inform design decisions.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical systems for motion control (linear guides, actuation, bearings, couplings), robot integration and machine kinematics.
  • Track record designing reliable automated machinery for manufacturing environments, including familiarity with safety standards and machine guarding best practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication and cross-functional collaboration skills; ability to mentor engineers and drive consensus.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to suppliers, assembly sites and customer locations as required.
