Job description
Title: Intellectual Property Associate - Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (Hybrid)
Location: Flexible / Multiple Office Locations (Midwest, Washington, DC)
Are you an experienced Patent Attorney looking to elevate your IP career with a top-tier law firm that values true practice variety and growth?
We are seeking a mid- to senior-level Intellectual Property Associate with a strong background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering to join a dynamic, collaborative national IP practice group.
In this role, you won't just be locked into pure patent prosecution. You will collaborate directly with inventors, advise clients on high-level IP strategy, conduct freedom-to-operate studies, and expand your skill set across licensing and IP litigation support.
What You'll Do:
Draft & Prosecute: Lead all stages of U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, including ex parte appeals, while interviewing inventors to capture cutting-edge technology.
Strategic Counseling: Conduct validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate (FTO) studies and prepare comprehensive legal opinion letters.
Broaden Your Scope: Counsel clients on overall patent strategy, basic licensing, trademarks, and copyright matters, with opportunities to gain litigation and transactional exposure.
Collaborate: Work closely with partners, senior associates, and support staff to deliver sophisticated case management across complex tech sectors.
What We're Looking For:
Experience: 2 to 5+ years of active patent prosecution and experience.
Education: J.D. from an accredited law school. A technical degree (B.S./M.S.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related technical field is strongly preferred.
Credentials: USPTO Registered Patent Practitioner (or Patent Bar eligible) and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
Technical Focus: Hands-on experience or deep technical familiarity with computer circuits, multiprocessor design, telecommunications, semiconductor technology, or software architecture.
Skills: Strong legal writing, superior analytical skills, and a solid understanding of patent litigation procedures (litigation experience is a plus!).
