Insurance Defense Associate

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Insurance Defense Associate to join our litigation team. The successful candidate will defend insurers and insureds in a wide range of civil matters, primarily personal injury, premises liability, construction defects, security claims, toxic exposure, and professional liability across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and applicable federal courts. This role requires strong litigation skills, independent case management, effective client communication, and courtroom experience from motion practice through trial.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a diverse litigation caseload from intake through resolution, including drafting pleadings, motions, and discovery responses
  • Develop case strategy and conduct legal research, factual investigation, and witness preparation for depositions and trial
  • Handle matters involving premises liability, construction defects, security claims, toxic exposure, professional liability, and related personal injury claims
  • Appear and advocate in state and federal court hearings, status conferences, motion practice, and trials
  • Take and defend depositions; prepare and respond to expert reports; coordinate and communicate with retained experts
  • Negotiate settlements and present settlement recommendations and strategy to clients; prepare settlement agreements and releases
  • Maintain clear, timely communication with insurer clients, claims professionals, and insureds regarding case developments and budgetary considerations
  • Supervise and mentor junior associates, paralegals, and support staff; assign tasks and review work product
  • Manage case budgets, docketing, calendaring, and ensure compliance with court rules, deadlines, and ethical obligations
  • Utilize litigation technology and e-discovery tools; prepare trial exhibits and trial binders as needed

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the New Jersey and/or Pennsylvania bar; admission to the relevant Federal District Courts strongly preferred
  • 3+ years of civil litigation experience, with substantial experience in insurance defense and personal injury matters
  • Demonstrated experience handling premises liability, construction defects, security claims, toxic exposure, professional liability, and other personal injury matters.
  • Track record of motion practice, taking and defending depositions, and courtroom appearances; trial experience preferred.
  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills; experience drafting motions, pleadings, and settlement agreements
  • Clean disciplinary record and high ethical standards; ability to travel within the region for court appearances and depositions as required
