Job description

HVAC Controls Sales Engineer

HVAC Controls Sales Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced HVAC Controls Sales Engineer to grow revenue by selling building automation and control solutions to owners, consulting engineers, contractors, and facility managers. This hybrid technical-sales role blends deep knowledge of HVAC controls, BAS/BMS platforms and integration with consultative selling, specification support, and account management. The ideal candidate will translate customer needs into system solutions, lead pre-sales technical activities, and support project delivery through close coordination with engineering and commissioning teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop new business and grow existing accounts by selling HVAC controls, building automation systems (BAS/BMS), and related services to commercial, institutional, and industrial customers.
  • Serve as the technical lead in the sales process: conduct site surveys, assess customer requirements, design solution concepts, and prepare technical proposals and cost estimates.
  • Provide product demonstrations, workshops, and trainings for customers, specifying engineers, and contractors to showcase functionality and value of controls and automation solutions.
  • Work closely with design engineers, systems integrators, and project managers to ensure accurate specification, seamless integration, and successful implementation of controls systems.
  • Respond to RFPs/RFQs and prepare bid packages, technical submittals, scopes of work, and value engineering recommendations.
  • Manage the full sales cycle from lead generation through contract close, coordinating internal resources (engineering, support, procurement) to meet customer needs and timelines.
  • Maintain and grow strategic relationships with consulting engineers, general contractors, equipment suppliers, and facility managers to drive specification and repeat business.
  • Track sales activities and pipeline in the CRM, produce accurate forecasts, and meet or exceed assigned sales targets and KPIs.
  • Support commissioning and start-up activities as needed, provide post-sales technical support, and coordinate warranty/field service issues to ensure high customer satisfaction.
  • Stay current on industry trends, BAS/BMS platforms, control sequences, communication protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus), and competitive product offerings; communicate insights to internal teams to shape product and marketing strategy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Systems, or related field, or equivalent technical sales experience.
  • 5+ years of direct experience selling HVAC controls, BAS/BMS, or building automation solutions; experience as a Sales Engineer or Account Manager preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge of HVAC control strategies, control system architecture, integration methods, and common communication protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets and managing complex technical sales cycles with multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; capable of preparing proposals, delivering technical presentations, and conducting product demonstrations to diverse audiences.
  • Hands-on familiarity with system design documents, controls sequences, P&IDs, and the ability to translate functional requirements into specifications.
  • Proficiency with CRM tools (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot), Microsoft Office suite, and experience producing accurate sales forecasts and reports.
  • Willingness to travel regionally for customer meetings, site visits, trade shows, and commissioning activities; valid drivers license.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Certifications or training in HVAC controls, building automation, or related vendor platforms (preferred) e.g., Tridium Niagara, Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, or similar.
