Position Overview
We are seeking a seasoned Grading Superintendent to lead site grading and civil construction operations for residential, commercial, and public works projects. The Grading Superintendent will oversee daily field activities, manage heavy equipment and crews, ensure work is performed safely and to plan/specification, and coordinate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to deliver quality site development on schedule and within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise grading and site development operations from mobilization through final grading and punch-list completion.
  • Plan and sequence work daily to meet project schedules, coordinating crews, equipment, materials, inspections, and subcontractors.
  • Manage and maintain heavy equipment fleets; schedule maintenance, coordinate rentals, and optimize equipment utilization and productivity.
  • Provide on-site leadership to crews, including hiring support, training, performance management, and enforcing safety and quality standards.
  • Interpret civil plans, grading plans, specifications, and permit requirements; ensure all work complies with design, environmental and regulatory standards.
  • Conduct daily site inspections, grade checks, slope verification, and compaction testing coordination; address defects and implement corrective actions.
  • Work with project management to monitor job costs, track productivity, control change orders, and support accurate progress reporting.
  • Coordinate with inspectors, engineers, surveyors, and utility providers to resolve field issues quickly and maintain project momentum.
  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture: conduct toolbox talks, ensure PPE use, and maintain compliance with OSHA, environmental, and company policies.
  • Maintain accurate field documentation including daily reports, equipment logs, production tracking, incident reports, and as-built notes.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in grading, site development, or heavy civil construction with at least 2 years in a superintendent or lead role.
  • Proven experience managing crews and heavy equipment operations (bulldozers, scrapers, excavators, compactors, loaders).
  • Strong knowledge of earthwork processes, slope/stormwater controls, compaction testing, and erosion control best practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil/site plans, specifications, grading plans, and staking information.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience in crew leadership, training, and performance management.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills with project managers, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors.
  • Familiarity with construction scheduling, progress tracking, and basic cost control practices.
  • Committed to safety with knowledge of OSHA regulations; OSHA 30 or equivalent preferred.
  • Valid drivers license; Class A CDL preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency with basic construction software and mobile reporting tools, and comfort using site survey/GPS equipment.
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform site walks and inspections regularly.
