Controls Technician
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Controls Technician to install, commission, maintain and troubleshoot building automation and HVAC control systems. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with building automation systems (BAS), Tridium Niagara platforms and Automated Logic/Delta/ALC controls, and will work closely with controls engineers, contractors and facility teams to optimize system performance, ensure occupant comfort and support energy efficiency initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, program and commission building automation system (BAS) hardware and software, including Tridium Niagara and Automated Logic controllers.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot and repair HVAC controls, sensors, valves, actuators, and field devices to minimize downtime and maintain system reliability.
- Develop, modify and test control logic, graphics and schedules within Niagara, ALC/Automated Logic and other BAS platforms.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance, calibrations and functional testing of building control systems and field devices.
- Read and interpret control schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings and sequence of operations.
- Collaborate with Controls Engineers and the service team during system design reviews, start-ups, and system upgrades to ensure constructability and performance.
- Execute on-site commissioning and start-up activities, document results and provide as-built records and system manuals.
- Provide technical support and training to facility operations staff and end users on BAS operation and troubleshooting.
- Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and change logs in the CMMS or project documentation systems.
- Adhere to safety protocols, site access requirements and company policies while working at customer facilities.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or associate degree in controls, HVAC, electrical or related field preferred.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with building automation systems and HVAC controls (installation, commissioning and service).
- Proven experience with Tridium Niagara framework (Niagara AX/4/4.8+) including JACE configuration, station development and driver integration.
- Experience with Automated Logic Controls (ALC), Delta and other common BAS/controls manufacturers.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, control sequences, sensors, actuators, VFDs and pneumatic/electrical components.
- Familiarity with industry protocols and standards such as BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks and Ethernet/IP.
- Ability to read and work from electrical schematics, control drawings and point-to-point wiring diagrams.
- Proficient troubleshooting skills using multimeters, clamp meters, hand tools and commissioning software.
- Excellent communication skills, customer service orientation and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Valid drivers license and willingness to travel to customer sites. OSHA or other safety certifications a plus.
- Controls Engineer or Controls Technician certifications, or manufacturer-specific credentials (Tridium, Automated Logic, Delta) are highly desirable.
