Controls Engineer

Location: Greenville, WI

Salary: $110-130k DOE

Position Overview
We are seeking a proactive Controls Engineer to design, program, and commission control systems for converting and web-handling equipment used in flexible film and film-converting applications. The role will focus on developing reliable PLC and HMI solutions, integrating motion and process controls, and supporting mechanical and electrical design using tools like SolidWorks and AutoCAD. The ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize machine performance, ensure safe operation, and deliver projects on schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission PLC-based control systems for converting, web-handling, and flexible film processing equipment.
  • Develop and implement HMI interfaces for operator control, diagnostics, and recipe management.
  • Integrate drives, motion controllers, sensors, and ancillary equipment to achieve precise web tension, registration, and cut/rewind control.
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, and wiring documentation using AutoCAD.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to review designs in SolidWorks and support system integration and installation activities.
  • Troubleshoot and debug electrical, PLC, and HMI issues during factory acceptance tests (FATs), site acceptance tests (SATs), and field startups.
  • Implement safety controls and interlocks to comply with applicable standards and company policies.
  • Program and commission Rockwell (Allen-Bradley) and Siemens controllers and associated software libraries.
  • Provide technical support to service teams and customers, including remote diagnostics, firmware updates, and field modifications.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and commissioning control systems for converting, web-handling, or flexible film machinery preferred.
  • Proficiency in programming PLCs and HMIs from Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley) and Siemens, including ladder logic, function block, and structured text as required.
  • Familiarity with motion control systems, servo drives, and encoder feedback for accurate positioning and speed matching.
  • Practical experience with CAD, AutoCAD, or SolidWorks for electrical schematics and layouts.
  • Knowledge of flexible film processing and converting equipment, materials handling, and relevant process parameters.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with mechanical engineers, project managers, and customers.
