CNC Shop Supervisor

CNC Machine Shop Supervisor

Position Overview
Lead and coordinate daily operations of a busy CNC machine shop to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality production. The Supervisor will manage workflow, enforce safety and quality standards, mentor machinists and operators, and collaborate with engineering and production planning to meet delivery schedules and continuous improvement goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and schedule shop floor personnel, including CNC operators, machinists, and support staff to meet production targets and deadlines.
  • Operate as the primary point of contact for production issues, prioritizing work and reallocating resources to maintain throughput.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate team members; conduct performance reviews and manage disciplinary actions in coordination with HR.
  • Maintain and enforce safety protocols, ensuring compliance with OSHA and company policies and conducting regular safety audits.
  • Oversee quality control processes, review inspection reports, and coordinate corrective actions to address non-conformances.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance and troubleshooting for CNC machines and other shop equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production planning to implement process improvements, tooling changes, and new work instructions.
  • Track shop metrics (uptime, yield, scrap rates, on-time delivery) and prepare regular reports for management.
  • Manage inventory of tooling, fixtures, and consumables; place orders and control costs.
  • Ensure documentation is maintained for work orders, set-ups, and machine parameters for repeatability and traceability.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of machining experience with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role (Machine Shop Supervisor experience preferred).
  • Proven hands-on experience with CNC machines (mills, lathes, multi-axis) and understanding of G-code, tooling, and setup procedures (nice to have).
  • Strong leadership and people management skills with experience in supervision, scheduling, and performance coaching (nice to have).
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing quality systems (ISO, AS9100 or equivalent) and GD&T.
  • Proficiency with CAM/CAD software and shop floor data systems is a plus.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose machine issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to collaborate across departments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree or machining certification preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and respond to production needs, including occasional overtime.
