Job description
CNC Programmer
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced CNC Programmer to develop and optimize CNC programs for milling and turning operations. The role focuses on translating engineering drawings into efficient G-code using CAM systems, improving machining processes, and supporting production to achieve quality, productivity, and cost targets. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with mills, lathes, CAM software, and strong problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, edit, and optimize CNC programs (G-code) for 3- and 5-axis milling machines and CNC lathes using CAM software.
- Translate engineering drawings, CAD models, and work instructions into accurate CNC toolpaths and setup sheets.
- Simulate and validate programs in CAM/CNC simulation tools to verify toolpaths, collision avoidance, and material removal.
- Select cutting tools, feeds, speeds, and machining strategies to balance cycle time, tool life, and surface finish.
- Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and quality inspectors to resolve manufacturing issues and implement process improvements.
- Generate and maintain program documentation, setup sheets, tooling lists, and revision control for production runs.
- Support shop floor setup, first-article runs, and troubleshooting of programs and machine performance.
- Analyze scrap, downtime, and process capability data to recommend corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Train and mentor operators and junior programmers on programming best practices, tooling, and CNC operation safety.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience programming CNC mills and lathes in a production environment.
- Proficiency with CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360, Siemens NX, or similar) and strong ability to generate and edit G-code.
- Hands-on experience with 3-axis and multi-axis milling as well as turning operations and tooling selection.
- Solid understanding of machining principles, feeds and speeds, cutting tool geometry, and material behavior.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and CAD models (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).
- Familiarity with CNC control platforms (Fanuc, Haas, Siemens) and shop floor safety practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and teamwork skills; detail-oriented with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Associate degree or certificate in machining, manufacturing technology, or relevant vocational training preferred; equivalent experience considered.
Benefits
- 401(k)
- Dental insurance
- Health insurance
- Paid time off
- Vision insurance
