Job description
Position Overview
We are seeking an Automation Technician to install, maintain, and improve our automated equipment and control systems. The ideal candidate will support with troubleshooting, repairing, and debugging PLCs, sensors, drives and related electrical and mechanical components. This role supports continuous operation, implements preventive maintenance, and collaborates with engineering and production teams to optimize system performance and uptime.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission and maintain PLC-based control systems, HMIs, and field devices in manufacturing environments.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and mechanical failures on automated equipment to restore operations quickly and safely.
- Repair and replace components including PLC modules, I/O, sensors, actuators, drives (VFDs), relays and power supplies.
- Debug PLC logic and HMI screens (ladder, function block, structured text as applicable) and implement code fixes or updates.
- Perform preventative maintenance, calibration and system health checks; maintain detailed maintenance and service records.
- Conduct testing and validation of systems after repairs or modifications, including run trials and performance verification.
- Work from electrical schematics, ladder diagrams, P&IDs and layout drawings to locate faults and implement solutions.
- Collaborate with engineers and production staff on process improvements, upgrades and root cause analysis for recurring issues.
Qualifications
- Proven experience with PLCs (Allen Bradley, Siemens, or similar) including programming, troubleshooting and debugging.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across electrical, electronic and mechanical systems; comfortable using multimeters, clamp meters, oscilloscopes and other diagnostic tools.
- Repair experience with drives (VFDs), sensors, encoders, relays, and industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Profibus, Modbus preferred).
- Working knowledge of ladder logic, structured text or function block programming and HMI configuration.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and P&IDs.
- Familiarity with industrial safety practices, lockout/tagout, and relevant regulatory requirements; safety certifications a plus.
- Excellent problem solving, communication and teamwork skills; able to explain technical issues to nontechnical staff.
