Summary


**This position is Monday - Friday day shift hours, no weekends, holidays or call.**


GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the initiation of standard therapy, protocols and diagnostic pulmonary procedures. This position is responsible for providing care to patients in all MMC care settings.


PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

5. Uses quality improvement processes, programs or outcome to help improve department operations.

6. *Reviews sleep study QI and data provided by contracted sleep study vendor.

7. Collaborates with Quality Coordinator to report quality improvement/performance indicators (QI/PI) measures as appropriate to staff and board.

8. *Performs electrocardiographs (EKG), overnight pulse oximetry, Holtor monitors, pulmonary function tests (PFT), home sleep studies, hand held nebulizers (HHN), incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy (CPT), oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry checks, and sputum inductions.

9. Assists with codes, traumas, and airway maintenance.

10. *Performs respiratory care discharge planning including qualifying a patient for home oxygen (O2) or nebulizer use.

11. Provides respiratory disease/process-specific patient/family education.

12. Assists with Pulmonary Clinic.

13. Reviews patient’s electronic medical record (EMR) for recovery of missed charges (QI Studies).

14. *Checks portable O2 level biweekly and storage weekly.

15. *Schedules and oversees Sleep Studies/Sleep Lab as ordered.

16. *Monitors and administers respiratory care modalities to patients. Identifies contra-indications and patient response to therapy and records therapy and outcomes in the EMR.

17. *Develops plans for the delivery of respiratory care as directed by physicians or protocols.

18. * Cleans, disinfects and sterilizes all respiratory equipment following current infection control guidelines; assembles equipment as required.

19. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.

2. Knowledge in the treatment techniques, limitations, and applications of respiratory care procedures.

3. Knowledge of basic respiratory equipment.

4. Skill in the delivery of respiratory care for infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

5. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

7. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills.

8. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

9. Ability to adhere to hospital and department procedures.

10. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

11. Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in administering therapy and/or other techniques and skills.

12. Ability to provide airway management and assist with intubation.

13. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient needs including working with patients with acute, chronic and complex disease processes and those who are dying.

14. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Graduation from an AMA approved program of Respiratory Care accredited by the National Board of Respiratory Care, Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) required. Current Respiratory Care License in the State of Nebraska required.


OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support Certification is required.
