Cable Installer Jobs

A Cable Installer works on installing and maintaining the cables that are involved in telecommunications systems for cable television and telephone services. These workers use a variety of construction equipment and tools to complete their projects which may involve setting up a variety of electrical components so that homes may have service. Replacing and installing fuses, transformers, switches, and circuit breakers, are common tasks for cable installer jobs. Complex projects may have longer installation times, varying the hours worked, especially during storms since telecommunications systems may need to be repaired. Individuals that seek cable installation jobs should expect to be on varying schedules frequently and be available to work overtime shifts.

A high school diploma or its equivalent is a sufficient amount of education for cable installers jobs. Having a good technical ability and understanding is beneficial but not required. Skills for this career can be gained through on the job training or through vocational programs, the Armed Forces, or at community colleges.

In 2006, there were 275,000 jobs with the majority of workers employed with telecommunications companies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a less than favorable employment outlook expected during the 2006 -2016 decade. Despite the unattractive employment outlook for cable installers jobs, there will still be very good job opportunities for qualified professionals with previous experiences and great interpersonal communication skills. Additional job openings will come from current workers that opt to pursue other job opportunities and workers that exit the work force entirely.
