Lifeguard Jobs

Lifeguard jobs are careers that involve ensuring people’s safety in and around swimming pools and beaches. They are also responsible for monitoring and maintaining the different chemical levels in the in the pool as well as its cleaning while observing the swimmers to make sure that they act in accordance with the regulations. On beaches, they make sure beach goers make follow the guidelines for safe swimming in the ocean. Working with other lifeguards, they mainly operate in shifts with standard 40 hour work weeks. Some employers may also require their lifeguards to instruct swimming classes and in cases of emergency provide immediate care until the appropriate emergency team arrives.   

The minimum education and training requirement for lifeguard employment is at least some high school education with a current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification. Employers tend to hire workers with great communication skills, previous experience as a lifeguard, and good team work skills since they will carry out their duties and responsibilities with other members of the lifeguard team. Additional lifeguard employment opportunities will come from the need to replace workers that make efforts to change careers and workers that opt to exit the work force entirely.
