Restaurant manager jobs ensure that the daily operations of restaurants are carried out to the best of the staff's ability by coordinating the efforts of the servers, kitchen workers, and all support staff. Individuals with restaurant management jobs are also responsible for hiring, training, and firing employees. Handling any customer service issues with the restaurant's food or service to the patrons, restaurant managers maintain a reputable image for their restaurants.

There are no specific education and training requirement for this type of position. The majority of restaurant managers have a significant amount of previous experience with jobs within the food services industry along with a high school diploma. Colleges and universities around the country offer 4 year programs in restaurant and hospitality management that covers nutrition, food sanitation, and food planning and preparation. The Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) designation is available for restaurant managers but not necessary for employment.

In 2006 there were 350,000 restaurant management jobs employed with most self employed as owners of restaurants and other smaller establishments. Although employment is expected to progress marginally, there will be a demand for workers based on the increase in population, the need for convenience, and the increase in household income. Additional employment will be due to the need to replace workers that have switched careers or that decided to leave the work force entirely. Job seekers will have the best opportunities at gaining restaurant management employment by having a degree in restaurant, hospitality or institutional food service management.
