Service Technician Jobs

A Service technician is responsible for making adjustments and maintaining automobiles electrical and mechanical systems. Workers should have an extensive knowledge of the operational systems for automobiles since they will be frequently running tests to diagnose the condition and recognize any problems associated with the vehicles they are working on. Service technician jobs require physical dexterity since this position will involve lifting and carrying different types of equipment. Working 40 hour work weeks, a percentage of service technician careers work even longer hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.

The minimum educational requirement is at least a high school diploma or its equivalent for service technician employment. The National institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is a credential that will garner more attention from potential employers, especially in larger urban areas since keen competition exists. While this is not a mandatory requirement for a service technician, an ASE certification is a standard in for automobile technicians.

In 2006, there were around 770,000 service technician jobs which were primarily centered in the automotive repair and maintenance shops. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected increase of 14 percent for the 2006 to 2016 decade. This employment rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations with the demand resulting from the increases in vehicles in operation. Additional job opportunities will be created as individuals change occupations and retire.
