Aircraft mechanic jobs are responsible for keeping aircraft in optimal condition for operation. They perform scheduled maintenance, turn in reports on aircraft, and perform checkups on equipment which is required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Inspecting each part of the aircraft from the engines to the different pumps and instruments, they complete the all of the necessary maintenance tasks that keep the aircraft functioning while recording what parts were replaced and when. Based on the cycle of operation these records can be consulted to gauge when certain parts need to be replaced. Further diagnostics can be gathered from larger aircraft with instruments that have self monitoring systems installed. After completing these types of repairs and diagnostics it is important that they must check for the integrity of these parts and mechanisms.

The education usually required for a highly precise position like an aviation mechanic can be attained through one of the 170 schools that are certified by the FAA. Aviation mechanic jobs are sometimes given on the job training, as well as specialized training, for such as skills for helicopter mechanic jobs. Most of the schools offer 2 and 4 year degrees in avionics, aviation technology, or aviation maintenance management. Students are required to complete a minimum of 1,900 class hours during a span of coursework that lasts 18 to 24 months.
