Janitors Jobs

Janitor jobs are in charge of keeping the appearance of different buildings up to satisfactory standards. Cleaning floors, washing windows, removing trash, and making repairs around establishments are common activities of janitorial jobs. In most instances, these jobs will be completed outside of normal business hours, while some employers will carry out their activities during business hours. Working 40 hour weeks, shift assignments for janitor jobs can vary. Potentially a physically demanding position, janitorial work requires a physically capable person.

Most janitors have at least a high school diploma or its equivalent since most skills needed for the position will be gained through on the job training from a more experienced worker. Employers tend to hire applicants with at least a high school diploma and good communication skills since janitorial efforts may need to be coordinated with other staff members. Opportunities for advancement for individuals with seniority to management or supervisory positions are more prevalent for high school graduates or persons with higher levels of education.

In 2006, there were 4.2 million janitor jobs with nearly 7 percent self employed with the majority employed at businesses or building maintenance services companies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected 14 percent increase in janitor employment during the 2006 to 2016 decade. This employment rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations. Janitorial jobs will have the largest number of new positions creating excellent job prospects for potential job seekers. Additional jobs will created from the need to replace workers that change careers or exit the work force entirely.
