In smaller companies, developers may be responsible for the entire project, everything from concept to implementation. Developer work can be challenging as developers must stay up to date on technology advances and shortcomings. In addition, developers must have knowledge of multiple coding languages in order to keep themselves marketable. While the majority of software developer jobs are technical, developers also need to develop effective communication and people skills. Particularly in smaller companies, developers will be responsible for meeting with other employees or clients in order to establish their needs. As such, developers should be able to communicate their ideas and actions in layman's terms.

Developer work often occurs in comfortable office environments; however, there is a growing trend of companies offering offsite or telecommuting positions for information technology based jobs. Developers can also benefit from freelance work and in some cases make enough income to operate their own small business. Developer jobs can be demanding as their schedule is often deadline oriented. This means that many software developer jobs involve working evenings and/or weekends.
