Programmer Jobs

Programmer jobs involve the writing, testing, and maintenance of programs that computers follow in order to perform their functions. Programmer jobs may also involve conceiving and designing logical problem solving structures for use with a computer. A programmer job involves utilizing one or more of several programming languages. Languages are often similar and relatively easy to understand. Positions and descriptions may vary, but programmer jobs are typically distinguished by the kind of language used, i.e. .Net or ASP.

There are two extensive types of programmer work: applications programmers and systems programmers. Applications programmers write programs for individual jobs or projects. Systems programmers write programs to preserve and manage systems software.

Computer programmer jobs are usually located in an office environment; however, there is a growing trend of offsite or telecommuting programming jobs. In the latter case, programmers are able to work from home. Most programmer jobs are on a 40 hour per week schedule; however, many programmer jobs will require the worker to be on call or work evenings and/or weekends when needed.

Most programmers have a college education. Many programmers have received a bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology, but the achievement of an associate's degree is also widely accepted by employers. Programmer work relies on the worker being knowledgeable and up to date on technology and computer languages. Continuing education, whether completed by oneself or through advanced education, is important for this line of work.
