STNA jobs provide care for patients and perform routine tasks under the supervision of other members of the medical staff. Bathing, feeding, and dressing the patients are common tasks performed by a STNA nurse. They have more contact with their patients than other members of the medical staff so establishing healthy relationships through positive communication is necessary to encourage health improvement. Working a standard 40 hour work week, evening, nighttime, holidays, and weekend shifts may also be required since patients may need care around the clock.

A high school diploma or its equivalent is the minimum educational requirements for state tested nursing assistants. Qualifications vary depending on the State of practice and the work setting although training programs for STNA jobs can be found all over the country at high schools, vocational centers, some community colleges, and even in some nursing homes. Having previous experience in the medical health care field will make individuals more favorable to employers. State training for proper licensure and certification will typically involve passing an examination along with an amount of work experience.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, STNA nursing employment will increase faster than the national average for all occupations for 2006 to 2016. This will stem from a rising elderly population and the health care services that they will need. Employment opportunities are expected to be excellent for qualified individuals. Additional employment opportunities will arise from workers that leave for other careers or exit the work force entirely.
