Physician Jobs

Physician jobs diagnose illnesses and prescribe the proper medications. They also administer treatment for their patients. There are two types of physicians M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) and D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic). They are similar with their methods of treatment but D.O.'s focus more on the musculoskeletal system, preventive medicine, and holistic patient care. Found in all specialties, D.O.'s are most likely to be primary care specialists. There are a range of specialties for physicians including anesthesiology, family and general medicine, general internal medicine, general pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and surgery. Working irregular hours, a large percentage of medical physicians and surgeons worked over 60 hours a week in 2006.

The training and educational requirements for physician jobs requires 8 years of education beyond high school and interning and residency. Premed students must complete undergraduate work in physics, biology, mathematics, and organic and inorganic chemistry. Admission into medical school is very competitive and requires at least 3 years of college before entry. After medical school, nearly all M.D. s enter a graduate education program that shifts to paid on-the-job-training. All States require their physicians to be licensed once finishing education from an accredited medical school, passing an examination, and completing 1 to 7 years of graduate medical education.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be an increase in the employment of general physicians by 14 percent from 2006 to 2016. This rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations and with the demand created by the growing elderly population, increasing the need for physician services. This will make job prospects for physician's jobs very good, along with the additional openings for created by physicians that leave the workforce entirely or shift to other professions.
