Orderly jobs provide care to patients in a variety of health care facilities such as hospitals, nursing care facilities, and mental health settings. They complete routine tasks under the supervision of other nursing assistants, doctors, or other members of the healthcare team.Setting up equipment, transporting patients to different rooms, and storing or moving supplies are some common functions that all orderlies jobs may consist of, although their specific functions depend on the assignments of the health care team. An orderly job may be physically demanding, since it requires hours of walking and or standings with large workload amount. They can have several patients that they are responsible for in nursing homes, mental health facilities, or hospitals with different levels of supervisions giving instructions.

Many employers consider a high school diploma or its equivalent a sufficient amount of education for hospital orderly jobs. They are usually trained on the job by registered nurses, licensed pratical nurses, or other nursing aides that may be more experienced. Orderly jobs can also be subject to evaluations that ensure than an aide can perform certain tasks to the best of their abilitiy. Employers may also have classroom instruction that gives different techniques on how to perform tasks for patients. There are guidelines for home health aides from the Federal Government where the employeres recieve funds from Medicare which requires home health aides to pass a competency test.

There were 1.4 million nursing aide positions in 2006, with nearly 52 percent of those workers employed within nursing and residential healthcare facilities and almost 30 percent working in hospitals. Job opportunities for a nursing orderly career are expected to be excellent since an increase of 28 percent in nursing and physicatric aides is projected to occur from 2006 to 2016 according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This rate will be faster than the national average for all occupations with the surge in employment attributed to the rising number of health care assistance that will be needed for the growing number of elderly persons in the country. Little or no change is expected within physciatric aides but nursing aide employment is expected to be faster than the national average. There will be many opportunities for hospital orderly jobs that will be present for qualified job seekers with previous experience and sufficient education credentials.
